Promoting consumer awareness of toxic chemicals hiding in everyday products.

There are more than 80,000 untested industrial chemicals being used in consumer products with little or no understanding of the consequences on our health.
We are conducting a vast toxicological experiment on our children which will affect generations to comePediatrician Philip Landrigan, MD, Preventative Medicine, Mt. Sinai Medical Center.

Articles & Documentation
I found the following articles to be informative and enlightening confirmations of my suspicions that environmental chemical exposures are responsible for Lexi's exposures.

USA Today conducted a study on the air quality surrounding 128,000 schools across the country.  Simply type in your zip code to see where your school ranks for air quality and the toxins found in it.

10 Americans - a must see short video covering the shocking results of a study conducted by the Environmental Working Group revealing over 400 hundred chemicals found in the blood samples taken from these unique subjects.

Contaminated Drinking Water across the US.  An article by MSNBC with a startling report on how pharmaceuticals end up in our drinking water.

The chemical BPA found in thousands of consumer products - a report by the National Toxicology Prgram triggers serious health concerns.

Contaminated bottled waters - findings reported by MSNBC.

Raw Milk - the second largest illegal commodities market

Formaldehyde has been classified as an air contaminant and is considered a human carcinogen.  Although deadly, this chemical is commonly used in consumer products.

Extraordinarily low concentrations of chemical exposures cause sex changes in frogs and fish.

A school's experiment on how processed and genetically modified foods affect behavior.

Air fresheners proven to contain toxic chemicals

FACTS

80,000 Chemicals (One Million Pounds) Produced Each Year.  Approximately 80,000 chemicals are used in millions of products and we have virtually no information of potential health effects.  Translated - over 75% of the 80,000 chemicals used in virtually all aspects of our life from food, personal hygiene, household cleaning products to the homes we live and cars we drive or their components have NOT been tested to see if they are harmful to our bodies.  They are non-regulated.

2% Rule.  There were times when we would read a packaged food label and think it was safe for Lexi to eat.  She would eat it, then four hours later horrible lesions would break out over her entire body - amongst other reactions.  Michelle would then research that food to find out what each ingredient was derived from listed on the label.  She then started hitting brick walls with some food manufacturers.  As Michelle would pry, many threw road blocks up in the form of the 2% rule.  They would merely say that by law they are not required to divulge 2% of their ingredients due to proprietary recipe law.  That was it, conversation over.  To re-cap - you have no right to know what ALL the ingredients are in the food you purchase from your local grocery store.

Fresh Seafood.  One time Lexi ate fresh never frozen shrimp and she was fine.  A second time she ate fresh never frozen shrimp and had a horrible reaction.  You can see the back of her legs in Lexi's Photo gallery.  Why?  Michelle spent a day going around to the seafood houses conducting research and her findings were startling, yet not really.  Think how more and more of the food we eat seems to last longer and longer on the shelf or in the refrigerator.  A fishing boat catches its haul on the open sea.  They have the option to dip their shrimp in sulphites (sulfur dioxide).  Sulphites are a shelf life extender and food color enhancer.  The predominate use of sulphites is in the wine industry.  Canada lists sulphites as one of their nine known food allergens that must be posted on their food labels (i.e. The US lists only eight:  peanuts/tree nuts/soy/shellfish/wheat/dairy/fish/eggs).  The fishing boat may also clean their fish catch on the open sea...and dip it in sulphites.  By law the boat captain is required to inform the distributor if any preservatives were used.  The distributor is under no obligation (by law) to inform restaurants, their retail customers or grocery stores that the fish being supplied has been dipped in sulphites.  A fishy game of Russian Roulette.  Based on our findings, whole uncleaned fish or anything that is live (clams/oysters/crabs)  is non-dipped.  You have to specifically ask if your fish has preservatives in it to be sure.

Autism.  This is one childhood health issue that is finally getting attention...though in our opinion not enough action or resources.  There are billboards all over the place stating that 1 in 150 kids are diagnosed with autism.  The sad fact is from 1992 to 2006 this 1 in 150 kids translates into 172% increase in autism for those years.  The sadder fact is no one knows why.  There is speculation, but no concrete facts.

ADD/ADHD.  In 1985, 500,000 children were diagnosed with ADD/ADHD symptoms.  As of 2005 there were 5 million to 7 million children diagnosed.  Again, this is sad, yet sadder is no one knows why.  The largest surge seemed to occur in the mid - 1990's.  Conspiracy theorists surmise two possibilities.  The first is many popular updated ADD/ADHD management drugs came out at this time which conveniently coincided with better diagnosing techniques, and the other is in the mid 90's a slew of chemical preservatives hit the market that are unregulated and untested.  And now we are getting more and more kids with some form of childhood attention deficit issue.
